When the Warner Pacific shoot was
scheduled it looked like an easy one dayer on paper, but by the time we
finished the dance sequence (see Day Six) it was late in the afternoon. Rick
and I had a huddle and determined that it was going to take at least 4-6 more
hours to get the 'snack table tip' gag in. Reluctantly we wrapped and came back
for day sixteen two weeks later. By this time I had compiled quite a number of
these behind the scenes photos on my laptop, which Stephanie, Chris, and Shelbi
search through. |
|
In the background is the stage where we shot the band
sequence. This day we are in the back of the gymnasium. Jacob showed up later
in the day, as his job at Costco kept him busy until the late afternoon. |

A canid shot with Stan. |
|
When I walked through the doors that first day, my
heart sank. The actual script called for the food to be positioned on the
bleachers with Kate and Jason kissing underneath. Phil and Nicole were supposed
to close the bleachers, causing them to be routed, and the food going all over
the floor. But, if you take a look crawling is about the only option. I quickly
went on a search for another solution. It wasn't perfect, but the table tip was
about the best I could come up with. I passed it by Rick who just chewed his
lip. It would work. |

Rick takes a light reading with Chris and Shelbi. |
|
The jib... now a common fixture on our shoot. I was
amazed after watching a lot of films how much this tools is used. Most of the
time you don't even think about it. It's just there, helping to meld the story
together. Once setup Dana and the crew rolled it down to the setup. |

Dana checks the zoom adjustment. |
|
Shelbi and Chris clown around by the door to the
classroom. It's actually a fairly large classroom, but because of the lighting
it becomes a closet. |
|
Smile Johnnie. |
|
A shot of our awesome, but limited crew that day. |
|
The foursome wait as Rick blocks out the daylight
coming through the windows in the room. We only had one chance with the food to
be thrown from the table, so we practiced a lot to see which way it would go,
thus the upside down table. Floor make a nice mattress there Chris? |
|
You don't have a movie if you haven't danced. Shelbi
and Stan get down. |
|
As Chris 'rushes' to stop the table from flipping over
he literally slams Shelbi into the bleachers in one of the first few takes.
Being in a gymnasium it echoed and sounded a lot worse than it was. It made the
blooper reel. Here they kid around about it. Also, as you may notice, there are
no bleachers in the mid-section. As it was summer they were doing some repairs,
etc. We kept the shot pretty tight. |
|
One, two, three, dip. |
|
The gymnasium exit was a tight area. Here I decide to
do a hand held shot since we needed to be tight by the end of the shot. It was
pretty tricky - if I moved just a little to far to the actors we created a
camera shadow. We eventually got it. |
|
Pretty much taken from the standing position of Chris
and Jacob as they argue. |
|
The aftermath. For us, shooting this scene was like
blowing up the White House in ID4, you only get one chance. We made sure
everything was right. One funny story about the food is that we bought it right
before the 'Day Six' shoot. But being that we didn't use it until almost two
weeks later it was in pretty sad shape. Good thing we trashed it... it wasn't
edible. |
|
The camera was positioned right next to the table on
the far side. Rick was on this side helping to tip it as Jacob pushed on the
door. I had my foot under the leg so it wouldn't scoot. Amazing what you have
to do to make something look 'natural.' |
