Day Four Title Larger View Graphic

Day four. We move to the school hallway. To the left of this shot is the rest of the hallway where almost 100 extras were waiting. As far as extras went, this was the most complicated day. The base end of the jib has a full monitor view. When we used the jib I spent most of my time in front of that monitor. Poor Dana, he always had to look around my shoulder.
Stan stands ready and waiting. The extras can be seen here. We had a guy, as seen in the background, that had dyed hair. He really stuck out and since we were running them back and forth down the hallway I really had to pay close attention to this in editing. Sara pointed out that in my first edit of the scene I had the guy go by once, and then again just a few seconds later in another angle. Twins, really!!
Okay, one picture.
The jib played an important part of the scene. At the beginning it starts high up and comes down to reveal the band by the phone booth with "Nicole". Dana did an excellent job with the shots.
To get the guys reaction to "Nicole" in the phone booth we shot two takes, one was them looking off camera, the other was them looking right into the lens. In editing I selected the ladder. To accomplish this we moved the jib head right into the phone booth. We also used the super wide lens adaptor to give it that fish eye look. For the band to have some point of reference we put Shelbi in the booth. This is one of my more favorite shots.
We kept the extras in the outside breezeway back at the end of the hallway (day one's location). We didn't bring them in until we were all set up to avoid any confusion. We were running really late at this point and several of them had already left. What to do? What we ended up with still made it look very busy.
The jib was set up for a 12 foot length. This made it great to get those high up shots, as well as eye height and floor height. You could set up shots very quickly. The only problem was that you needed a lot of room to maneuver the thing. It is almost on the other side of the hallway as we maneuver it into the phone booth.
Any break is a potential time for sleep.
I took several shots of the elaborate lighting techniques that Rick used. Here he has a 2K light with diffusion paper and a blue gel. Then he has some other type of diffusion and then two flags in front of that. He achieved real cool things with these setups.
Luchtime. At least it was for everyone else. I was just about ready to go when Danny Toman grabbed my camera and snapped this shot. Later he took and made it my wall paper for my laptop, which I still have setup.
The next day of shooting we were going to be using the song "Friend In You" for the "Mr. Seavers" Audition. Here I kick back as listen as Bart plays me the music mix over the phone of that song. You can see that I am listening intently, and slightly smiling. What I am hearing sounds great.
After the hallway shot we moved the jib right outside the doors to get the shot of the girls handing out flyers. Stan is here, taking his job as guider very seriously. I must say about Stan is the fact of what he lacked in experience he well made up for in enthusiasm. Always a good word and a smile. He could talk just as loudly as me sometimes.
There was this 'spot' that seemed to appear on the wide angle lens. No-one could figure it out until we finally determined that it was lens flare from using the wide angle. Dana is here checking things out. The slight flare still appears in the shot today.
Tommy and I kid around.
Rick sits down next to me for a directors talk. Chris is in the background working away on more signs to put on the doors. We needed to block some light, and it did the trick.
While Dana took care of the camera Rick as coordinating the extras that walk through the shot. In the process of which he backs directly into the wide angle lens on the camera. It has a few sharp edges and he sliced his ear wide open. As a grip he carries around clothes pins on him at all times to put up gels and such. Maybe they can act as a cinch too. By the end of the day it was; Camera-1, Rick-0.
Shelbi poses with the camera. The flyers she holds were done by Chris Bresky. Besides being an actors he is an excellent illustrator.
Rick chorales what extras we have left after the hallway scenes inside the building. To the left of Rick is Melissa Wilent (Baker High Dance Coordinator) and to the right is Ericka Pultz one of our grips.
Another shot of our extras.
Shooting of the actual scene. I loved this shot. It was originally planned out by Kyle (my brother). It starts tight on the poster and pulls up and away to reveal they girls and people passing by. With the limited amount of extras we had them pass by several times.
A break between takes.
To keep that lens flare off of the shot we position large black "flags" around the camera. For the most part it did the trick.
We never used this shot, but I did pull the audio. It is when "Luke", "Eric" and "Sean" leave the phone booth after they hear the bell. We shot it was a walking shot using the Stedicam. The main problem was space and lighting. Also was the fact that we had a fair skinned actor in Michael Olson, and a very dark skinned actor in Tommy Odum. Tyson was in the middle of them so if we brought up the light level for Tommy, Michael was overblown. And the other way…you get the picture. I liked the idea of the shot. It just didn't work out.
