Day three. Now it's starting to set in. The night before, after the dance, we shot the scene where Jason comes to the aid of Kate by giving her his $50 take for that night to help pay for a tow truck. It was so late we just parked everything in the gym. We still had one last scene to shoot there. We decided to also shoot a "bonus" scene that Derek Johnson had developed for the novel that wasn't in the main script.
Now and then you could catch people trying to get a few winks. As we were setting up the shot out the of corner of my eye I saw Tyson sitting with his eyes closed. I creeped over and just as I was about to take the shot the floor creaked and he started opening them. Thus the expression.
Okay Tyson, up and at'em. I knew I wanted a follow shot of some type. Rick said that using the doorway dolly without track would cause too much creaking so he laid down the sound blankets and then the track dolly wheels. There we're still a few creaks on the soundtrack, but this is covered by music in the final edit.
Just before the take. From left to right; Tyson, Tommy, Dana, Stan, Rick and Jim Romeo. The trick to this shot was timing. Tyson was supposed to walk into frame as the camera moved. The camera stopping and his hitting the stage at the same time took a few takes.
The bonus scene. We almost didn't shoot this because of time. But I'm glad we got it in. The scene involves Shawn loading up with pretzels and then almost dumping them down Nicole's shirt as he pivots. Michael played it off well, even adding in a little extra look at the end of the scene that humors everyone.
Michael gives us his thumbs up on the scene.
The locker-room scene. It was simple, in concept. These were tight quarters, and though we used lights, most of the overhead light came from skylights. When clouds came by it took us down two f-stops. We also had a company move after this scene to one of the classrooms.
The extras stand by as Rick and I discuss part of the scene.
We had lights at the other end of the isle so Dana used a flag on the camera to avoid any lens flare.
Stan asks Danny to go get something. The rest of the group looks on. One of the nice things about this location was that it was right next to the gymnasium, and the breezeway we used on day one.
I sit down to figure out with Jacob on how to do his part. When does he sit down in the scene? Does he stand up again? As a director you're always required to make quick decisions. Everyone looks to you for your leadership. It can get nerve racking, but I just got into this mode, decisions had to be made, make them.
